THE PROGRAMME
A professional training session for licensed guides, cultural mediators, and heritage professionals.
This second Louvre Masterclass explores the emergence of Romanticism through the masterpieces of Théodore Géricault, Eugène Delacroix, and their contemporaries.
Adopting a painting-by-painting approach, the session takes place entirely within the Louvre’s Romantic painting galleries, allowing participants to examine each work in depth and understand the artistic, historical, and political forces that shaped the movement.
Conducted directly in front of the paintings, the masterclass explores how Romantic artists challenged the ideals of Neoclassicism and developed a new visual language centered on emotion, imagination, movement, and individual experience.
Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the visual language of Romanticism, the political and social context of nineteenth-century France, and the relationships between the major works displayed in the gallery.
Through close visual analysis and discussion, the session will also explore practical approaches to interpreting these paintings and building a compelling narrative for museum audiences.
