Louvre Masterclass VI : Painting in Northern Italy

Louvre Masterclass VIII : Italian Mannerism
This eighth Louvre Masterclass explores the development of Italian Mannerism in the sixteenth century through works by Correggio, Parmigianino, Rosso Fiorentino, Bronzino, Pontormo and their contemporaries. Emerging in the wake of the High Renaissance, Mannerism gradually challenged the ideals of balance, stability and harmony associated with Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo. Artists developed a more complex visual language characterised by elegance, elongated forms, sophisticated poses, unstable spaces, refined colour and deliberately artificial expression.

Louvre Masterclass IX : Italian Baroque Painting
This ninth Louvre Masterclass examines the development of Italian Baroque painting in the seventeenth century through works by Caravaggio, the Carracci, Guercino, Guido Reni and their contemporaries. At the turn of the seventeenth century, Italian painting underwent a profound transformation. In response to the elaborate refinement of Mannerism, new visual languages emerged, characterised by closer observation of the natural world, a renewed use of light, heightened emotion and fresh approaches to religious and historical narrative.

Louvre Masterclass X : Italian Sculpture: From Donatello to Canova
This tenth Louvre Masterclass is devoted to Italian sculpture, tracing its development from the Renaissance through the Baroque to Neoclassicism in a journey from Donatello to Canova. Close examination of individual works will reveal the principal stages of this evolution. During the fifteenth century, Italian sculptors rediscovered models from classical Antiquity and developed new approaches to depicting the human figure and carving relief. While Donatello's naturalism influenced an entire school, the Quattrocento also retained distinctive regional traditions, including Florence and the gentle style associated with Settignano, and Naples through the work of Laurana. The session will also touch on ornamental sculpture through the doorway of the Stanga Palace.

Louvre Masterclass XI : Spanish Painting at the Louvre
This eleventh Louvre Masterclass explores Spanish painting from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century through works by El Greco, Ribera, Murillo, Zurbarán, Goya and their contemporaries. Although the Louvre’s Spanish paintings do not enjoy quite the same renown as its Italian or Flemish collections, they are exceptionally rewarding. With the notable exception of Velázquez, the leading figures of the Spanish school are represented, often by masterpieces such as Ribera’s The Clubfooted Boy or Murillo’s The Young Beggar. The collection also has a remarkable history, notably the opening in 1838 of Louis-Philippe’s Spanish Gallery, which brought together nearly 500 paintings but remained at the Louvre for only about a decade.
